Belper, a market-town of Derbyshire, on the Derwent, 7½ miles N. of Derby. It owes its prosperity to the cotton-works of Messrs Strutt, one of whom was in 1856 created Lord Belper. The manufacture of silk and cotton hosiery is also largely carried on; but nail-making has declined. Pop. (1851) 10,082; (1881) 9875; (1891) 10,420.
