Biard, AUGUSTE FRANCOIS, a genre painter, born at Lyons in 1798, travelled in early life in the Levant, in 1839 visited Greenland and Spitzbergen, in 1853-59 Brazil, and in 1865 travelled round the world. Among his best pictures are the 'Beggar's Family,' 'African Slave-market,' 'Fight with Polar Bears,' and 'The Wandering Comedians.' He died in Paris, June 1882. His wife, Léonie d'Aunet (1820-79), separated from him since 1845, was author of some novels, a play, &c.
