Bib, also called BRASSY, POUT, or WHITING POUT (Gadus luscus), a fish of the same genus as the Cod, Haddock (q.v.), and Whiting, pretty common on many parts of the British coasts, found also on those of Norway, Sweden, Greenland, &c. It is seldom more than a foot long, but differs from the other British Gadidae in the great depth of its body, which equals at least one-fourth of the entire length. The back is arched, and the nape exhibits a rather sharp ridge. The head is invested with a loose dilatable membrane. The names Bib and Pout, both originally local English names, were at one time supposed to refer to distinct species (G. luscus and G. barbata), but these, probably, are really one.
