Birkenfeld, a German principality belonging to Oldenburg, but surrounded by the Prussian Rhine province, and intersected by the railway from Bingen to Saarbrück. It has an area of nearly 200 sq. m., with a population of 41,242; it has been connected with Oldenburg, 300 miles distant, since 1817. The capital, Birkenfeld, has a pop. of 2500.
