Blane, SIR GILBERT, physician, was born at Blanefield, Ayrshire, in 1749. He studied at Edinburgh University, and in 1779 sailed with Lord Rodney to the West Indies, where his gallantry under fire gained him the appointment of physician to the fleet. In 1783 he was elected physician to St Thomas's Hospital, London. As head of the Navy Medical Board, he was instrumental in introducing the use of lemon-juice and other measures for the prevention or remedy of diseases on board ship. In 1812 he had a baronetcy conferred upon him. He died June 26, 1834. He published several works.
