Boito, ARRIGO, Italian composer and poet, was born 24th February 1842, at Padua, and studied at the Milan Conservatorium. His first important work is the opera Mefistofele, produced without success in 1868, but which has steadily grown in popularity. It betrays the influence of Wagner. Other operas are Ero e Leandro, Nerone, Oda all'Arte. He wrote his own librettos, and has published several songs, lyrical dramas, and novels.
