Bonar, REV. DR HORATIUS, Free Church minister and popular hymn-writer, was born in Edinburgh, 19th December 1808, and educated at the High School and university there. He was ordained to the ministry at Kelso in 1837, where he remained for nearly thirty years, when he was translated to Chalmers Memorial Free Church, Edinburgh. For a time editor of the Christian Treasury, Presbyterian Review, and Quarterly Journal of Prophecy, he has published besides more than twenty volumes of a religious character; but is best known as the author of Hymns of Faith and Hope (3 series, 1857-66), selections from which have found their way into all collections for church use. He died 31st July 1889.
