Bond, WILLIAM CRANCH, an American astronomer, born 19th September 1789, at Portland, Maine, became a watchmaker, and erected one of the first private observatories in the United States. In 1838 he accompanied the exploring expedition sent by government to the South Sea, and in 1840 he became director of the observatory at Harvard University. Here he and his son, George Phillips Bond (1826-65), discovered a satellite of Neptune and the eighth satellite of Saturn. He died 29th January 1859.
