Bonifacio, STRAIT OF, the modern name of the strait between Corsica and Sardinia, the Fretum Gallicum of the Romans. At the narrowest part it is only 7 miles wide, and the navigation is difficult. The strait receives its name from the small town of Bonifacio in Corsica, with an excellent harbour; pop. 3397.
