Born, BERTRAND DE, a famous troubadour, born about 1140 in Périgord, who played a conspicuous part in the struggles of the English king Henry II. and his sons, during the latter part of the 12th century. He died before 1215. More than forty of his poems are extant, among them both glowing love-poems and strong and sarcastic satires. See his Life by Stimming (Halle, 1879).
