Bottesini, GIOVANNI, contrabassist, born at Crema, in Lombardy, 24th December 1823. A concert tour, begun in 1840, and extending to America, established his fame as the greatest master of the double-bass fiddle. From 1846 he was director of Italian opera in Havana, Paris, Palermo, and Barcelona, and died 7th July 1889, director of the conservatory at Parma. His compositions included four operas and an oratorio; but his best work is his Méthode de Compiète de Contre-basse.
