Britannicus, or in full, Claudius Tiberius Britannicus Cæsar, was the son of the Emperor Claudius (q.v.) and his wife Messalina, and was born 42 A.D. The second wife of Claudius, Agrippina, caused her husband to adopt her son Nero, and treat Britannicus as an imbecile; and Nero, after his accession to the throne, caused his miserable half-brother to be poisoned in 55.
