Burgkmair, HANS, a noted old German painter and wood-engraver, was born at Augsburg in 1473, and died there in 1531. He was the father-in-law of the elder Holbein and the friend of Albert Dürer, whose influence is manifest in his works. Several excellent paintings by Burgkmair are preserved in the galleries of Munich, Berlin, Augsburg, and Vienna; but he is best known as a wood-engraver, his cuts amounting in all to nearly 700. Among the most celebrated of these is his 'Triumph of the Emperor Maximilian,' in 135 cuts, with a description by the emperor (see MAXIMILIAN); and Weisskunig, another fine series of 237 cuts.
