Butler, a flourishing town and capital of Butler county, Pennsylvania, on the Conequessing Creek, about 30 miles N. of Pittsburgh (45 by rail). It has woollen, flour, and planing mills, and plate-glass and carriage factories. The surrounding region is rich in natural gas, petroleum, and coal and iron fields. Pop. (1880) 3163; estimated (1888) 7000.
