Cairns, JOHN, D.D., LL.D., theologian, was born at Ayton Law, Berwickshire, 23d August 1818, was a distinguished student at Edinburgh, and was ordained at Berwick in 1845, where he remained till 1876, having from 1867 been professor of Theology in the United Presbyterian Church. He became principal in 1879. Dr Cairns, who was an eminent preacher, wrote the article 'Kant' in the Encyclopedia Britannica (8th ed.), contributed to the new edition of Herzog's Real-encyklopädie, and published the memoir of Dr John Brown (1860), and Unbelief in the 18th Century (1881). He died 12th March 1892. See Life by Macewen (1895).
