Calais, a town of Washington county, Maine, 82 miles ENE. of Bangor, at the head of navigation on the St Croix River, which is part of the boundary between the United States and Canada. The terminus of a local railway, Calais is connected by several bridges with St Stephen's, a Canadian railway station. There is some ship-building and a large trade in lumber. Pop.
