Calligonum, a genus of leafless Polygonaceæ (q.v.), with large four-winged nuts or achenes. C. Pallasia is a succulent shrub common on sandy steppes near the Caspian, where its acid shoots and fruits often serve to allay thirst. A nutritious gum is prepared from its root.
