Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 2: Beaugency to Cataract, p. 708

Canella (Canella alba), a small tree belonging to the gamboge order (Clusiaceæ), common in the West Indies, where it is often called Wild Cinnamon. The bark of the young branches is the C. Bark (White Cinnamon) of apothecaries, and is imported from the Bahamas. It is aromatic and stimulant, but now seldom employed in medicine; in the West Indies it is used as a condiment.
