Cape Verd, the most westerly headland in Africa, jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, between the rivers Gambia and Senegal, in 14° 53' N. lat., 17° 34' W. long. It was discovered by the Portuguese in 1443, and is said to have derived its name from a group of gigantic baobab trees adorning its summit.
