Carapa

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 2: Beaugency to Cataract, p. 752

Carapa, a genus of Meliaceæ, found in tropical America and Guinea. The stem of C. guianensis is used for masts; its bark is a febrifuge, and its seeds yield a lamp oil, called earapa (often corrupted into crab) oil. That of C. guineensis (probably the same species) is used by the negroes for anointing their bodies, its bitterness protecting them from the bites of insects.
