Carburetted Hydrogen

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 2: Beaugency to Cataract, p. 759

Carburetted Hydrogen is a term in chemistry applied to several compounds of carbon and hydrogen. Thus, light carburetted or mono-carburetted hydrogen, \text{CH}_4, is the gaseous compound popularly known as marsh gas and fire-damp, and is the principal constituent of coal-gas (see GAS). Heavy carburetted or bi-carburetted hydrogen, \text{C}_2\text{H}_4, is otherwise known as Olefiant Gas (q.v.).
