Cardigan

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 2: Beaugency to Cataract, p. 761

Cardigan (anciently Aberteifi, 'mouth of the Teifi'), the county town of Cardiganshire, a municipal borough and seaport on the right bank of the Teifi, 3 miles from its mouth, and 117 miles NW. of Cardiff by rail; population (decreasing) 3447. With Aberystwith, Lampeter, and Adpar, Cardigan till 1885 returned one member to parliament. Remains of a castle crown a low cliff on the Teifi, which is supposed to have been founded in 1160 by a Norman baron. The town suffered much in the struggles between the Welsh and the Normans. The Teifi is said to have been the last British resort of the beaver.
