Cardwell, EDWARD, VISCOUNT, born in Liverpool, 24th July 1813, from Winchester passed to Balliol College, Oxford, where he took a double first. He entered parliament in 1842, from a Peelite gradually became a Liberal, held portfolios in four cabinets, and was raised to the peerage in 1874. For reforms introduced by him as Secretary for War, see article ARMY. Cardwell was one of Peel's literary executors, and edited his Memoirs (1856-57). He died 15th February 1886.
