Carissimi, GIACOMO, composer, born in 1604 at Marino, near Rome, was organist from 1628 in Rome, and died there in 1674. His greatest service was the development of the sacred cantata. The finest of his oratorios, including Jephtha, have been edited by Chrysander in Denkmüler der Tonkunst (vol. ii. 1882).
