Carse is a term applied in Scotland to low, alluvial lands adjoining rivers, such as the Carse of Gowrie in Perthshire (q.v.), and the Carse of Falkirk. Carse soils generally consist of very fertile argillaceous deposits, although some are hungry and barren clays.
