Caserta, a town of Italy, situated on a plain 20½ miles NNE. of Naples by rail. It is chiefly remarkable on account of its magnificent palace, one of the finest in Europe, which was founded by Charles III. in 1752. Pop. 17,257. The province of Caserta has an area of 2307 sq. m., and a pop. (1894) of about 740,000.
