Catanzaro, a city of South Italy, on a rocky hill 6 miles from the Gulf of Squillace, and 326 SE. of Naples by rail. It has a cathedral, a ruined castle of Robert Guiscard, and a college. Catanzaro suffered very severely by an earthquake in 1783. It has manufactures of silk, velvet, and woollen fabrics, and an active trade. Pop. 20,931. The province of Catanzaro has an area of 2307 sq. m., and a pop. of 450,000.
