Cavalier, JEAN

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 31

Cavalier, JEAN, a journeyman baker, from Ribaute, near Anduze, who, born in 1681, in 1702 became a famous leader of the Camisards (q.v.), withal a prophet and preacher. He surrendered to Villars in 1704, and entered the service of Savoy; but in 1711 we find him settled with a British pension in England, and he died at Chelsea, governor of Jersey, 17th May 1740. See a long article in vol. ix. of the Dict. of National Biography (1887).
