Cetinje

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 77

Cetinje (also spelt Cettigné), capital of Montenegro, lies in a rocky valley 2093 feet above sea-level, and 17 miles E. of Cattaro, with which it is connected by a carriage road. It is the residence of the prince, and of an archimandrite, and consists of an unpretentious palace, a few private houses, an abbey, gaol, arsenal, theatre (which serves also for the state library and national museum), hospital, theological seminary, gymnasium, and a girl's high-school, maintained at the charge of the Empress of Russia. Behind the palace is an elm, under which the prince delivers judgments. Pop. 2200.
