Châteauroux, the capital of the French department of Indre, on the left bank of the river Indre, 88 miles S. of Orleans by rail. It has manufactures of woollens, iron, leather, and tobacco. General Bertrand was born and died here, and a statue was erected to him in 1854. Pop. (1872) 16,858; (1891) 22,553.
