Cherso, an island of Illyria, belonging to Austria, in the Gulf of Quarnero, 13 miles SSW. of Fiume. A bridge unites it with the adjoining isle of Lussin. Area, 127 sq. m.; pop. (1880) 9550. On its rugged hills sheep are fed; there are large forests, and on the coast, wine, olives, and fruits are produced. Cherso, the chief town, on the west side, has a spacious harbour. Pop. 4670.
