Cinematograph

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 255

Cinematograph, a moving picture, obtained by taking a numerous series of photographs from any changing scene at rapid intervals (fifty or more in a second). These are printed on a continuous strip of celluloid, and may either be thrown on a screen by means of a magic-lantern or viewed through a magnifying-glass. In either case they must pass the view of the spectator at the same rate at which they were taken, and the result is a moving reproduction of the original scene. It is a modification of Edison's kinoscope. See EDISON, ZOETROPE.
