Coimbatore, the capital of a district of Madras Presidency, on the Noyil, 304 miles SW. of Madras by rail. It lies 1437 feet above the sea, is well built and drained, and has a cool temperature that renders it a comparatively suitable residence for Europeans. Pop. (1881) 38,967; (1891) 46,383. Pop. of district, 2,004,829.
