Cope, EDWARD DRINKER, American naturalist, born in Philadelphia, 28th July 1840, was professor of Natural Sciences at Haverford College, 1864-67, and afterwards appointed paleontologist to the United States Geological Survey. His numerous papers and works on paleontology are highly valued; and to the discussion of the theory of evolution he contributed over a dozen works of importance. He was a member of numerous scientific societies in America and in Europe, and among other recognitions of his services to science, he, in 1879, received the Bigsby gold medal of the Royal Geological Society. He died 12th April 1897.
