Copperhead (Trigonoccephalus contortrix), a venomous snake, allied to the rattlesnake, found in eastern North America. It has a thick body from 2 to 3 feet long, and a short tail without rattles, and is slow and clumsy in its movements; but, lurking in dark and moist places, and giving no warning, is more dreaded than the rattlesnake. The term was given to the peace party during the American civil war.
