Cor Anglais

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 474

Cor Anglais, a wind-instrument of the reed species, similar in construction to the Oboe (q.v.), to which it has the same relation as the Bass-horn (q.v.) has to the Clarinet (q.v.). It is usually made in the key of F, a fifth lower than the ordinary oboe, and has the same range—viz. from E in the bass stave to B♭ above the treble stave.
