Corrievrekin

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 496

Corrievrekin (Gael., 'Brecan's cauldron'), a whirlpool or dangerous passage scarcely a mile broad, off the west coast of Argyllshire, in the strait between Scarba and Jura isles. It is caused by the meeting of tides (running 13 miles an hour) from the north and west, in the narrow passage into the Sound of Jura, round a pyramidal rock, which rises with rapid slope from a depth of 100 fathoms to within 15 feet of the surface.
