Cotton-worm

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 517

Cotton-worm is a common name for the caterpillar of an owlet moth (Aletia xyliaria), which is in some years very destructive to the cotton crop of the United States. The caterpillar is green, with yellow stripes and black dots, and grows to a length of Common Cotton-grass (Eriophorum Angustifolium), an inch and a half. The boll-worm, the caterpillar of an allied form (Heliothis armigera), is also very destructive to cotton-buds and other crops.
