Countersign

Countersign, in military affairs, is a watch-word used to prevent unauthorised persons passing a line of sentries whose orders are to stop any one unable to give it. It is fixed each day by the commanding officer, but may be changed at any moment if necessary, and is only communicated to those entitled to know it.
