Crawford, WILLIAM HARRIS, born in Virginia in 1772, practised law, and was elected to the United States senate in 1807 and 1811. Appointed minister to France in 1813, and secretary of the treasury in 1816, he was a Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1824; but none of the candidates securing a majority, the House of Representatives chose John Quincy Adams. Crawford returned to Georgia, where he was thrice elected circuit judge, and died 15th September 1834.
