Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 3: Catarrh to Dion, p. 705–706

Dead Nettle (Lamium), a genus of Labiatae. L. purpureum and L. album, together with (Gale- opsis) the closely allied Hemp-nettle, are very common British weeds.

A detailed botanical illustration of a White Dead Nettle (Lamium album). The plant is shown with a central stem, several pairs of opposite, serrated leaves, and a terminal cluster of small, white, tubular flowers. The drawing is in a classic woodcut or engraving style.
White Dead Nettle
(Lamium album).

The commoner species have been somewhat thoroughly naturalised in the long-settled parts of the United States. They are sometimes boiled as pot-herbs in Sweden. The name seems derived from the superficial resemblance to the true or stinging nettles; this is especially marked in L. album.
