Dircks, HENRY, civil engineer, born at Liverpool, 26th August 1806, is known as the author of works on perpetual motion (1861) and electrometallurgy; of The Ghost (in which he describes his invention, commonly called 'Pepper's Ghost') (1863), of a life of the Marquis of Worcester (1865), of Inventors and Inventions (1867), and of novels and essays. He died at Brighton, 17th September 1873.
