Dolgelly ('dale of hazels'), the capital of Merioneth, North Wales, on the Wnion, 62 miles SW. of Chester by rail. It lies in a rich and picturesque valley, at the foot of Cader Idris, and during the summer months is much frequented by tourists. It has manufactures of coarse woollens and flannels; its Welsh tweed is in great repute. Pop. (1851) 2041; (1891) 2467. Here, in 1404, Owen Glendower held a parliament, and signed a treaty of alliance with Charles VI. of France.
