Downton, a town of Wiltshire, on the right bank of the Avon, here split into three branches, 6 miles SSE. of Salisbury. It has an Early English market-cross, a cruciform church, and a singular earthwork (the Moot); whilst 2 miles north is Trafalgar House, presented in 1814 by the nation to Lord Nelson's brother and successor.
