Earlston, or ERCILDOUNE, a village of Berwickshire, 4 miles NNE. of Melrose, with a railway station and manufactures of gingham, woollens, &c. Between it and Leader Water is a fragment of the 'Rhymer's Tower,' the traditional abode of Thomas the Rhymer (q.v.); whilst one mile south is Cowdenknowes, with its 'bonny broom.' Pop. 1060.
