Ebenaceæ, an order of dicotyledonous trees and shrubs allied to Sapotaceæ. About 250 species are known, mostly tropical, of which many furnish hard and durable timber (see EBONY); several are natives of the United States. The fruits are often edible. See DATE PLUM.
