Edward THE ELDER, eldest son of King Alfred, reigned from 901 to 925. He conquered the Danish parts of England as far as the Humber, permanently united all southern and central England, was acknowledged by the Welsh kings, and, according to tradition, was chosen by the Scots 'to father and lord.'
