Egremont

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction, p. 231

Egremont, a market-town of Cumberland, on the river Eden, 6 miles SE. of Whitehaven, whither it sends by rail the iron ore mined in the neighbourhood. On an eminence to the west stand the ruins of Egremont Castle, the legend of whose horn forms the subject of a poem by Wordsworth. From 1749 till 1845 Egremont gave the title of Earl to the Wyndham family. Pop. 5976.
