Elmira, capital of Chemung county, New York, on the Chemung River, 149 miles ESE. of Buffalo by rail. It contains a court-house, a famous state reformatory prison (see PRISONS, Vol. VIII. p. 426), and the Elmira Female College, and has extensive manufactures of iron rails, railway and other carriages, flour, leather, woollens, boots and shoes, &c. Pop. (1870) 15,863; (1890) 30,893.
