Emeritus

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction, p. 323

Emeritus (Lat.), a term applied originally to a Roman soldier who had served out his time, and been discharged on something equivalent to our half-pay. It is now commonly employed to designate certain functionaries, such as professors, who have been honourably relieved from the duties of their office, on account of infirmity or long service, and who are usually granted a retiring allowance.
